- Jurel Clement established new Under-20 Boys decathlon discipline record
- Shyiem Phillip closed first day in 3rd position
- Under-20 Decathlon concludes 5 April
Jurel Clement established a new Under-20 Boys decathlon discipline record as the 2026 CARIFTA Games opened at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium. The Carriacou native, representing Grenada, surpassed his own previous mark during the opening event of the multi-discipline competition.
In the first event of the schedule, Clement recorded a wind-legal time of 10.93 seconds in the 100 metres. The performance improved on his previous record of 10.99 seconds, set into a 1.1 m/s headwind at the 2025 CARIFTA Games at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago.
Clement entered the competition following a gold medal performance in the Decathlon at the ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships in Jamaica. A former student of Hillsborough Secondary School in Carriacou, he relocated to Jamaica in 2023 to continue his academic and athletic development at Kingston College.
At the conclusion of Day 1, two Grenadian athletes remain in contention for podium finishes:
| Athlete | Day 1 Points | Previous School | Current School |
| Shyiem Phillip | 3,801 | Westerhall Secondary | Kingston College |
| Jurel Clement | 3,625 | Hillsborough Secondary | Kingston College |
Shyiem Phillip closed the first day in 3rd position. He transitioned to Kingston College following the 2024 InterCol season, during which he earned bronze in the High Jump and placed 4th and 5th in the 110m Hurdles and Long Jump, respectively.
In 2025, Phillip captured silver in the Under-17 Octathlon at the CARIFTA Games with a total of 4,766 points. He is expected to be a key competitor for Kingston College through the 2027 season.
The Decathlon comprises 10 disciplines contested over 2 days, with 5 events held each day. Points are awarded based on performance metrics in each discipline rather than finishing position alone.
The Under-20 Decathlon concludes on 5 April. The remaining disciplines will determine the final standings and medal allocations. With Phillip and Clement closely positioned after Day 1, the final day is expected to be competitive as the Grenadian duo look to secure medals through the technical and endurance events.
