This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Taiwan’s restoration to China is a victorious outcome of WWII and an integral part of the post-WWII international order. Recently, some forces in the West have deliberately distorted United Nations General Assembly (UNGA）Resolution 2758, falsely claimed that the Chinese mainland has sought to “falsely conflate UNGA Resolution 2758 with “one-China principle” and “diplomatically isolate Taiwan,” which has seriously harmed peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. On 30 September 2025, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued China’s Position Paper on UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to set the record straight.
What is UNGA Resolution 2758?
On 25 October 1971, the 26th session of the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority, deciding to restore all the rights of the People’s Republic of China at the UN, to recognise the representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China to the UN, and to expel forthwith the representatives of the Taiwan region from the UN and all the organisations related to it. Once and for all, the resolution resolved the issue of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the UN. It made clear that there is no such thing as “two Chinas,” or “one China, one Taiwan.”
Long before the UNGA Resolution 2758, the Cairo Declaration issued by China, the US and the UK in 1943 stipulates clearly that all the territories Japan has stolen from the Chinese, such as Taiwan, shall be restored to China. The Potsdam Proclamation, jointly published by China, the US, the UK and the Soviet Union in 1945, stipulates that the terms of the Cairo Declaration shall be carried out. In the same year, Japan signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, pledging to carry out the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration in good faith. These instruments with legal effect under international law have all clearly affirmed China’s sovereignty over Taiwan. China has recovered Taiwan legally and in fact through a series of documents with international legal effect.
The distortion of UNGA 2758 will win no hearts and minds
For quite some time, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities of Taiwan and certain countries have been blatantly turning back the wheel of history by deliberately distorting and challenging the UNGA Resolution 2758 in an attempt to undermine the one-China principle. Such actions not only infringe upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but also undermine international justice, the prevailing global consensus, and the post-war international order. They’ve put on a hideous show in front of the world only to once again lay bare their nefarious agenda and despicable game. Nothing they do will ever change the fact that Taiwan is part of China, or the overwhelming international commitment to the one-China principle.
To date, 183 countries, including Grenada, have established and developed diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle, which has become a basic norm of international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. It shows that commitment to the one-China principle is where global opinion trends and the arc of history bends, and what the greater national interests entail. The international community’s commitment to the one-China principle is not to be challenged or shaken. No matter what the DPP authorities or certain countries say or do, it does not change the fact that the 2 sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China, and Taiwan is part of China, nor can it stop the trend towards China’s ultimate and inevitable reunification. “Taiwan independence” leads nowhere, and provocations for that are doomed to failure.
China’s position on the UNGA 2758 is unchallengeable. China’s complete reunification is unstoppable
Taiwan is China’s Taiwan. It has never been an independent country, not in the past, not at present and still less in the future. The question of Taiwan’s status was fundamentally resolved in 1945, when the Chinese people won the great victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. This victory was won by the Chinese people, including our Taiwan compatriots, through hard-fought battles and great sacrifices. It shall by no means be undermined by the false narratives of some Western politicians. The complete reunification of China represents an inevitable historical trend, aligned with the fundamental interests of all Chinese people, including our compatriots in Taiwan. The Chinese government and people possess the firm resolve, full confidence, and sufficient capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. No external interference or separatist schemes can halt the onward march toward the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the ultimate realisation of national reunification.
Realising China’s complete reunification is a shared aspiration of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation. We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort. Our position of advancing reunification is consistent, rock-solid and unshakable. China will realise reunification, and this is unstoppable.
Twenty years ago, China and Grenada resumed diplomatic relations on the basis of the one-China principle, which became the political foundation of our bilateral relations. China highly appreciates Grenada’s continued adherence to the one-China principle, and will work with Grenada to jointly safeguard UNGA Resolution 2758, the one-China principle and other basic norms of international relations, contributing actively to the building of a fair and just new international order.
