Governor-General Dame Cécile La Grenade handed out 64 awards during the 2025 Independence celebrations; however, the majority did not follow the 2007 National Honours and Awards Act.
14 people were named as National Awardees according to the 31 January 2025 Government Gazette — 3 awarded for 2022, and 11 awarded for 2025. After the national awardees were announced and pinned by the Governor-General, a further 50 were announced and presented with awards.
Jacqueline Alexis, Chairman of the National Celebrations Committee, explained that the 50 awardees were recognised by the “Government of Grenada for exceptional contributions in their respective fields in the last 50 years, as we acknowledged the closing of our 50th year and the beginning of the next 50.”
The 50 awardees represent 20 categories.
Audry Lyons, who received the Spice Island Award for emulative service to Grenada in Nursing, and Marva St Paul and Meryl Hutchinson-McQueen, who received the Camerhogne Award for meritorious service to Grenada, were the 3 awarded for 2022.
The Spice Isle Award is awarded to any individual who has rendered truly emulative service to Grenada in any field of human endeavour or for other humane action. The Spice Isle Award may be awarded only in Silver and presented to only 2 citizens in any year. The Camerhogne Award is awarded to any individual who has rendered meritorious service to Grenada, in furtherance of national prestige or for gallantry. The Camerhogne Award is awarded only in Silver and presented to only 2 citizens in any year.
The 2007 legislation instructs that each year on Independence Day, 7 February, or at such other times as may be expedient, the Governor-General may confer awards on individuals, living or dead, who have rendered distinguished and meritorious service to Grenada or who are otherwise deemed worthy of such awards.
The 11 people awarded for 2025 are 3-time sports Olympian Kirani James who shall be entitled to add Sir to his name; Dr Nicholas Earle Brathwaite, Gloria Payne-Banfield, Vyra McQueen, Shirley Robinson, Michael Darbeau, David Edwards, Francis Urias Peters, Zaid Azam Rahaman, Beverley Grey, and Anselm LaTouche.
In keeping with the legislation, an awardee will be honoured with either the Companion of Grenada Order, the Spice Isle Award, the Camerhogne Award or the Medal of Honour.
