The Government of Grenada, in collaboration with its partners, The University of the West Indies, St George’s University (SGU), the People’s Republic of China, the Organisation of American States (OAS) and Mother Noel Charity, awarded 104 Grenadians with scholarships on Tuesday, 26 November 2024.
The 104 scholarships awarded are valued at EC$20,683,674.54.
Sen. the Hon. David Andrew said this is an investment in the future of Grenada. “I want to say to you that you are part of the solution,” Minister Andrew said. “Young people, this opportunity that you have must not just be seen as an opportunity to get higher education, but to actively contribute to the solutions, to finding [solutions], to the increasing challenges that we have in our universe, in our world and specifically in Grenada.”
The Minister for Education stated that to support the Government of Grenada’s goal to have at least one university graduate per household in Grenada, Government is launching the First-Generation Scholarship opportunity.
Senator Andrew said, “The Government of Grenada remains committed to its vision of seeing one university graduate in every household, and in the coming months and years, you will hear a lot more about this, but this scholarship award takes us a step closer. Now, I don’t know how many of you already have persons in your households who have degrees, but I suspect that maybe some of you fall into that category, but we are actively going to pursue the First-Generation Scholarship Award opportunity, which you will hear more about, to ensure that we find opportunities for persons, in whose families nobody else has gone to university before.”
On Thursday, 10 November the initial First-Generation Scholarship Opportunity was advertised for study at Monroe University (online, St Lucia Campus or New York Campus). Alistasha Ottley is one of 5 recipients of the Mother Noel Charity Scholarship. The charity, which is based in the United Kingdom, gives £600 to each recipient. Ottley, who is studying business and science at the T A Marryshow Community College, is very grateful for the assistance.
Ottley said, “Basically, this scholarship is going to help me, as in expense [for] travelling, getting the necessary materials for school and I guess basically just coming out of poverty.”

Can you imagine we spent close to $30 million on the longest independence day celebration in the world but we allocate just $3.9 million to scholarships?
For the most part we are depending on charity to cover educational expenses for nationals while we waste our money on frolicking.
