Grenada’s star Cricketer Afy Fletcher has been ranked second highest all-rounder in the recent Women’s T20I in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2024, held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

On Friday, 1 November 2024, Fletcher was greeted at Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) by government officials, family members, Grenada Cricket Association members, her local teammates, West Indies cricketer Andre Fletcher, and the principal and students from St Mary’s Catholic School. They all presented her with tokens of appreciation for her accomplishments.

Hon. Delma Thomas, Minister for Youth and Sports and MP for St Andrew North-West, Fletcher’s hometown, expressed her pride in Fletcher and her accomplishment, echoing the sentiments of the entire community. The Sports Minister noted that Fletcher is an inspiration for women in cricket and sports in general and has made all Grenadians and the West Indies proud; and as such, the Ministry will do more to showcase her as an icon worth emulating. “As a woman, she has stood and represented us well continually and will be given the support in every way to allow her fullest potential to be realised,” added the minister.

Sen. the Hon. Seville Francis, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports, said Fletcher’s accomplishment inspires her and demonstrates to young girls that they, too, can break barriers and eliminate generational limitations imposed on young women. “It also shows other young females who wish to be like you in a male-dominated sport; you have taught every young Grenadian girl that they can accomplish it as well. I can change my “I Can’t” into a “I Can.”

The celebrations proceeded in her hometown of La Fillete with a motorcade and a day of cricket, during which, Grenadian Olympic Bronze Medallist Lindon Victor surprised the iconic female cricketer with his presence.

From the tender age of 14, Fletcher has represented Grenada in cricket and continues to represent the spice island and the Caribbean with pride. She especially mentioned that her toddler son gives her the drive to continue to excel, and she is prepared to share her expertise and knowledge with the younger ones.

About Afy Fletcher.

Grenadian West Indies Women’s Cricketer, Afy Fletcher, was one of 2 West Indies players named in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Team. Fletcher, alongside teammate Deandra Dottin, made significant contributions to the West Indies campaign. The 37-year-old leg spinner was a key performer with the ball, finishing the tournament as the third-highest wicket-taker. Her standout performances included 2 three-wicket hauls against Scotland and England. Her best figures of 3-21 came in the crucial final group stage match against England, helping the West Indies secure their spot in the semi-finals. In the semi-final clash against New Zealand, Fletcher again played a pivotal role, claiming 2 important wickets and contributing an unbeaten 17 with the bat.
