The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, hosted a significant side event titled “Joining the Dots: A Holistic Approach for Disaster Resilience” focusing on the unique challenges faced by small island nations like Grenada, which are highly vulnerable to climate change impacts.

At the heart of this event was the launch of the Commonwealth Disaster Resilience Centre, an initiative dedicated to strengthening the resilience of Commonwealth nations against natural disasters intensified by climate change.

The Commonwealth Disaster Resilience Centre will serve as a critical resource for member countries, offering access to essential data, climate finance options, and practical solutions to fortify resilience across infrastructure, healthcare systems, and natural ecosystems. Participants explored innovative financing models, the transformative role of technology in disaster response, and the importance of international partnerships in tackling these pressing issues.

In her opening remarks, Commonwealth Secretary-General The Rt Hon. Patricia Scotland underscored the urgency of this mission: “The new Commonwealth Disaster Resilience Centre is dedicated to future-proofing Commonwealth nations, so they can effectively mitigate, adapt, recover, and fortify themselves against the impacts of extreme weather and climatic unpredictability that significantly affect their populations and economies. It is imperative to acknowledge that women and children disproportionately bear the brunt of these crises. The centre’s mission is to provide action-orientated solutions aimed at safeguarding the most vulnerable individuals in the most susceptible regions.”

The event also included a powerful video presentation, showcasing the devastating effects of Hurricane Beryl on Grenada, underscoring the need for rapid action in building disaster resilience.

Bringing together government leaders, experts, and representatives from civil society, the event fostered meaningful dialogue on best practices, research, and collaborative innovations aimed at enhancing disaster resilience throughout the Commonwealth.
