  • LaCrette was appointed by Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell
  • News of his dismissal from Cabinet began circulating on Wednesday
  • Prime Minister Mitchell will host a media briefing on 1 August

Jonathan LaCrette, one of 3 senators appointed by Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell as mandated in the Constitution, has been recalled, according to a news release from the Government Information Service (GIS).

The release said that Prime Minister Mitchell will host a media briefing on 1 August and, among the topics, is “The recalling of the appointment of Senator the Hon. Mr Jonathan LaCrette, the Minister for Youth and Sports.”

La Crette was appointed as a senator after he failed to win the St George’s Northwest constituency in the June 2022 General Elections. He was initially appointed as the Health Minister but in a cabinet reshuffle in January 2024 he was reassigned to serve as the Sports Minister.

News of his dismissal from the Cabinet began circulating on Wednesday. The weekly cabinet meeting was delayed to Wednesday because Grenada was hosting the 47th Regular Meeting of the Heads of Government of Caricom.

Other topics to be discussed in the briefing, whose speakers will also include Attorney General Senator Hon. Claudette Joseph and Senator Hon. David Andrew are:

  • Chairmanship of Caricom and the hosting of the 47th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community which concluded on 30 July 2024 in Grenada
  • Updates on the relief assistance, the rebuilding and restoration efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl
  • The end of the Firearms Amnesty and the entry into law of the Firearms (Amendment) Act No. 2
  • Update on Education matters and the resumption of school in September
