Grenada’s landmark diet survey has started and will be conducted throughout all the parishes of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique from April into July 2024.
The survey titled “An Evaluation of Dietary Intakes and Food Preparation Methods Pre and Post Pandemic among Grenadian Households” will seek to better understand and evaluate the food consumption habits and patterns and also the methods of food preparation used by Grenadians and to determine if any changes resulted from the Covid-19 pandemic, our decisions about what we eat and how we prepare our foods. The study will also explore other factors affecting food security within Grenadian households.
The survey will be done anonymously, as no names or identification mechanism will be used while information is being gathered by enumerators, and only one person per household who must be age 18 or older, will be required to fill out the questionnaire. Participation in this study is absolutely voluntary.
The information gathered through the survey will be used to design and implement policies that would strengthen food security mechanisms, the agricultural sector and assist the health sectors in programme planning. The information may also be used by regional counterparts to better understand the needs of communities like those across Grenada and also would be used in educational administration for nutrition, dietetics and health studies.
The study is spearheaded by a team of qualified researchers with the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC), The University of the Southern Caribbean and St George’s University (SGU).
