  • Marijuana seized during 3 different operations; 10 pounds intercepted at courier service
  • Compressed cannabis seized along La Tante Public Road carries estimated street value of EC$1,156,680
  • Individual from St Patrick charged for possession of firearms and ammunition, remanded to Richmond Hill Prison

Don McKenzie, Commissioner of Police, disclosed that during the past 2 weeks the Drug Squad of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) has confiscated approximately 1,000 pounds of compressed marijuana or cannabis.

He said that the marijuana was seized during 3 different operations, 10 pounds of which were intercepted at a courier service. “Earlier this week in one of our courier facilities, 10 pounds of marijuana was intercepted and 2 persons were charged accordingly.” McKenzie did not name the courier service nor the names of the people charged.

McKenzie, who is officially on a one-year contract as Police Commissioner, disclosed that last week Monday night into Tuesday, there was an interdiction of some 510 pounds of marijuana with a street value of more than EC$1 million.

A news release dated 9 April from the Community Relations Department (CRD) said that the Drug Squad Unit intercepted a green Suzuki Escudo along the La Tante Public Road, and conducted a search which revealed a quantity of compressed cannabis. “The cannabis weighed 510 pounds, and carries an estimated street value of EC$1,156,680. Two men are presently in police custody assisting with investigations. The vehicle was also impounded.”

McKenzie, who on Thursday morning delivered remarks during a ceremony to honour several police officers — deployed to St Lucia last year to assist that country’s law enforcement force during a spate of robberies, killings, and other violence crime — said that more than 400 pounds of marijuana was confiscated in the early hours of 18 April.

“And as recently as this morning some 400-plus pounds of marijuana was interdicted and there are currently 5 persons assisting with the investigations,” he said, thanking officers of the Drug Squad for their work to rid marijuana and other illegal substances from the streets.

Recently the Parliament of Grenada approved an amendment to the Firearms Act to provide for the Minister to declare a 90-gun amnesty by Order. That Order is yet to be published in the Grenada Gazette. However, the Police Commissioner said that one of the highlights in the past 14 days was the arresting and charging of an individual from St Patrick for possession of firearms and ammunition, who has since been remanded to the Richmond Hill Prison.

Do not legalise it under any circumstances. More criminal activity will overwhelm island

Marijuana has been legalized and has medical usage – why does Grenada waste precious resources on marijuana !! Legalize it and profit from it – stop living in the colonial era !! Grenada has so much potential to be a great prosperous nation – change the thinking !

The RGPF seem virtually incapable of reigning in the gang violence and curbing the use of illegal weapons by these same gangs, yet congratulate themselves on confiscating a drug for which a committee has been established to study for commercial distribution. Shots fired on the basketball court on the Carenage just this week during a game watched by scores of families, and when the police are called, no officers are dispatched. Good job. Let the top brass answer for their inaction when it truly counts.

    Legalize it…
