More than 12 participants from various entities are undergoing an intensive Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) train the trainers (ToT) workshop, currently underway at the National Stadium.

The Grenada Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Training of Trainers (ToT) Workshop is a component under the Country Directed Fund (CDF) facilitated through the Delegation of the European Union to Barbados project.

It seeks to build the Resilience of CARIFORUM States to Disaster Risks and Climate Change Impacts facilitated by the CDEMA Coordinating Unit.

The 3-day exercise is part of the CDF approved for Grenada through the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA). The CERT offers emergency training to volunteers at the community level, as an extension of the first responders’ services until professional responders arrive.

Participants from the Red Cross Society, Ministry of Health, Met Office, NaDMA, the Cadet Corps, and RGPF, including the Fire Department and Coast Guard Divisions are being exposed to, and being taught to teach others situational approach to leadership, the importance of individual contribution, self-sufficiency, and problem-solving as well as how to prepare themselves, their families, their neighbours and others in the event of a disaster.

They are also being taught how to transfer knowledge, how to put listeners at ease, and how to employ appropriate use of humor among other valuable lessons in their mission of training others.

Two instructors from Dominica, Donalson Frederick and Anthony Williams are facilitating the training. The 12 local trainees from the ToT Training will assist in the instruction of the CERT participants’ training. The CERT course will also provide CERT kits for instructors and Participants.
