Staff development training, in how the public service operates, is being provided to the over 200 public officers attached to the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government.

The 3-day training, organised by the Public Service Commission, is the first of its kind since the Ministry was established in 1997.

It is also the first time that representatives of the Public Service Commission, which was set up in 1969, have visited Carriacou.

Chairman of the Commission Deborah St Bernard said the public service is rules-based and it is hoped that following the training, Ministry employees will have a new sense of purpose when they get to work.

Signifying the importance of the training was Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government Hon Tevin Andrews. He noted that when public officers fail to carry out their duties efficiently and effectively, they are doing a disservice to the country.

“After the training, we hope to see an increase in the level of productivity; it should spark a flame and burning desire from Heads of Divisions to lead the charge and be creative in getting the work done,” he added.

The training will include presentations from ex-senior public officers such as former Director of Audit Julia Lawrence, Gloria Payne-Banfield and Richard Duncan.
