This position plays a key role in supporting the Finance Department by maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and actively contributing to the implementation of improved systems, documented policies, and streamlined workflows.
The Accountant is expected to exercise sound financial judgment, support decision-making processes, and help modernise operational practices across all segments of the authority.
Key responsibilities:
- Ensure that all financial data (ledgers, journals, reports) is correct and up to date
- Review and approve monthly accounting schedules and journal entries
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP/IFRS and relevant legislation
- Generate financial analyses, cash flow reports, and budget performance summaries
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes across departments
- Provide financial support and oversight across operational projects, business segments and various initiatives, ensuring accurate reporting, and alignment with organisational objectives
- Oversee inventory accounting and reconciliation in collaboration with the Storekeeper
- Verify procurement transactions, supplier payments, and inventory postings for accuracy and compliance
- Ensure proper accounting for materials issued to projects and soft loan clients
- Assist with preparing year-end financial statements and audit schedules in accordance with statutory deadlines and external auditor requirements
- Ensure financial reporting complies with the SOE Handbook, including monthly, quarterly, and annual submissions to the Ministry of Finance and other stakeholders
Required skills & qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum 3 years of accounting experience, preferably in public sector or multi-segment operations
- Strong understanding of GAAP/IFRS and statutory reporting requirements
- Proficiency in accounting software (eg, QuickBooks Online) and Excel
- Excellent analytical, organisational, and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- High level of integrity and confidentiality
Preferred qualifications:
- Level 2 Professional certification (ACCA, CPA, CIMA)
- Experience with cost accounting and inventory systems
- Familiarity with government reporting and donor-funded projects
