Statement by Dr Festima Hamlet, Chief Dental Surgeon, in observance of Dental Week 2025.

Ladies and gentlemen, as we commemorate Dental Health Week observed from 2–8 November 2025 we reflect on this year’s theme: “Good teeth, good health at any age.” This message reminds us that oral health is not a privilege of youth but a lifelong responsibility and opportunity.

As declared by former US Surgeon General Dr David Satcher (2000) you cannot be healthy without good oral health. This statement underscores that oral care is not optional but essential, and a mirror of our general health.

The World Health Organisation (2023) reports that oral diseases affect more than 3.5 billion people globally, with tooth loss being most common among older adults. This can lead to poor nutrition, lower self-esteem and even systemic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Our mission as dental professionals and caregivers, is to bridge this gap through community outreach, education and policy reform regardless of circumstances.

For our senior citizens, maintaining good oral hygiene is particularly important. Your smiles are priceless gifts that tells stories of love, laughter, pride and perseverance. And to caregivers and families, remember that supporting oral care for elders is an act of love. It is therefore vital, that we treat oral health as an integral component of healthy aging.

By promoting preventative care, accessible dental services and public education, we empower seniors to maintain their dignity, confidence and wellbeing.

However, to maintain a healthy smile lies in the simple daily actions like brushing, flossing, eating well-balanced meals and visiting the dentist regularly. So, let us advocate for smiles that have brightened families and communities for generations.

Together, every smile we protect contributes to a healthier, happier, and more resilient society.

Therefore, as Grenada’s Chief Dental Surgeon, on behalf of the Ministry of Health, I wish everyone a Dental Health Week.
