The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Government of Grenada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in scaling up resilient, green, and affordable housing solutions.

These joint efforts will accelerate Grenada’s Project 500, which aims to deliver 500 climate-resilient and affordable homes to its people.

The collaboration adds to GGGI’s ongoing support to Scale-up Resilient Green Affordable Housing across the Eastern Caribbean with funding from the Government of Ireland and Agence Française de Développement (AFD). GGGI and Grenada’s Housing Ministry will work together to improve citizens’ access to resilient infrastructure, accelerate the implementation of priority housing initiatives and strengthen national and local green growth planning, financing, and institutional frameworks. The partners will develop financial models and structures that support resource mobilisation for construction, considering the affordability of homes for targeted groups of homeowners.

Finley Jeffrey, Permanent Secretary in Grenada’s Ministry of Housing, stated, “This partnership with GGGI represents a major step forward in our commitment to provide Grenadians with homes that are not only affordable, but also resilient to the growing threats of climate change. Through Project 500, we are building the foundation for a greener, safer, and more inclusive future for our people.”

By providing technical expertise and network guidance to integrate green building standards, GGGI and the ministry will promote low-carbon construction practices and improve environmental sustainability across Grenada’s housing programmes. It is expected that mobilising international climate finance and expanding Grenada’s access to global resilience facilities will contribute to long-term affordability, resilience, and scalability of housing and infrastructure initiatives in the face of climate change.

Daniel Muñoz-Smith, GGGI’s Caribbean Representative, said, “At GGGI, we believe resilient, green, and affordable housing is a cornerstone of sustainable development, particularly in island economies like the Caribbean, where housing stocks are vulnerable to climate impacts and other unique challenges. We look forward to expanding this collaboration with Grenada for advancing inclusive and environmentally sustainable climate actions that support a more resilient housing sector, aligned with national goals.”

GGGI’s technical team will conduct a review of existing housing models to identify opportunities for integrating resilient and green climate features, such as rooftop solar systems, aligned with ongoing renewable energy initiatives. Leveraging this assessment, GGGI will work in close coordination with the Project 500 team, the Housing Authority, and the Ministry of Housing to develop draft guidelines for incorporating Resilient, Green, and Affordable Housing in Grenada.
