- Ceremonial opening of Parliament was on Friday, 12 September
- Emmalin Pierre sustained minor injuries on way to Parliament
- Kate Lewis-Peters seconded the motion of the Throne Speech
Opposition Leader Emmalin Pierre was not present at Parliament for the ceremonial opening of the 4th Session of the 11th Parliament on Friday, 12 September 2025, because of a vehicular accident she experienced on her way to the event.
“I am just finished getting some medical attention after an accident this morning. Unfortunately, I had to miss the ceremonial opening of Parliament, but God is awesome! I’m ok. Just a minor injury,” she wrote on her Facebook page minutes before Governor-General Dame Cecile La Grenade completed presenting the Throne Speech to the joint session of the Houses of Parliament.
The minor injury to Pierre resulted in her receiving 4 sutures or stitches to her toe. A suture is a sterile surgical thread, or stitch, used to hold the edges of a wound or surgical incision together to promote healing and prevent complications like infection and bleeding.
Because of her absence, Member of Parliament Kate Lewis-Peters stepped in and fulfilled the role Pierre had to play following the presentation of the Throne Speech. Lewis-Peters seconded the motion of the Throne Speech and extended gracious thanks to the Governor-General and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.
The Governor-General, in her address, told the Parliament that the theme for the 4th Session of the 11th Parliament is “Delivering a Better Future Together.” She explained that this theme embodies the Government’s steadfast commitment to honour the trust placed in the government by the people of Grenada. “It reflects our responsibility to deliver meaningful results today, while building on the solid foundation we have laid for a future shaped by our shared vision. Our focus remains fixed on our long-term national vision — “Vision 2035” — and now, Vision 75, which seeks to make Grenada a model of inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous development,” she said.
