As Grenada prepares for the festive Carnival season, Spicemas 2025, the Consumer Affairs Division is urging consumers to exercise caution while engaging in holiday shopping and utilising services.

The division reminds consumers of their fundamental rights as outlined in the Consumer Protection Act 2018, and also encourages businesses to ensure fair practices throughout the season.

Consumer Rights reminder:

The Consumer Affairs Division reminds consumers of some key rights, which should be considered during this season:

  • Unsolicited goods or services
  • Right to select suppliers and products
  • Right to choose and examine goods
  • Rights regarding delivery of goods or supply of services
  • The right to cancel reservations

In addition, the Consumer Affairs Division urges businesses to avoid any form of price gouging during the season. Suppliers are to maintain ethical business practices, including but not limited to:

  • Information to consumers: Businesses must provide accurate and sufficient information to consumers regarding the goods or services offered. Labels on products should be in English, or an appropriate interpretation should be provided to ensure clarity and understanding.
  • Businesses are to refrain from engaging in unfair trade practices, including but not limited to:
    • Bait advertising (enticing consumers with deals that are not genuinely available)
    • Unfair transactions
    • False, misleading, or deceptive representations about products or services
  • Disclosure of Price: The price of goods and services must be clearly disclosed to consumers prior to purchase
  • Avoidance of Dual Pricing: There should be no deceptive pricing practices, such as charging different prices for the same product or service
  • Proper Labelling: All products should be clearly labelled with full trade descriptions

The Consumer Affairs Division encourages consumers to remain vigilant and informed about their rights and to report any violations to the office.

A full listing with detailed descriptions of the rights of consumers and the duties of suppliers, can be found by visiting the following site https://faolex.fao.org/docs/pdf/grn214213.pdf

For further information or to lodge a complaint, consumers can contact the Consumer Affairs office at:

  • Telephone – (473) 435 1459 or 417 6207
