Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Export Development Hon. Joseph Andall reaffirmed Grenada’s unwavering commitment to regional integration and the pursuit of sustainable development, at the 59th Regular Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), which was held in Georgetown, Guyana, from 27–28 November 2024.
Minister Andall was joined by Portia Fraser, Trade Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Export Development, and engaged in discussions critical to advancing regional trade and economic priorities.
The COTED meeting brought together Caricom member states to discuss pivotal issues shaping the region’s economic landscape. Among the topics discussed were the free movement of Community nationals, the Revised Draft Policy on the Regulation of Mergers and Acquisitions, trade in goods, and the establishment of a Community Intellectual Property Framework.
A highlight of the discussions was the progress achieved under the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME) framework, particularly regarding the Free Movement of Skills Regime. This initiative has significantly expanded opportunities for Caricom citizens by enabling the mobility of approved categories of workers across member states, deepening regional integration and economic collaboration.
Minister Andall emphasised the urgency of tackling critical challenges, including climate change, digital transformation, and improving the region’s competitiveness, and stated, “The progress we see in the Caricom Single Market and Economy reflects the strength of our unity and shared vision as a region.”
The COTED meeting concluded with several resolutions designed to enhance regional trade efficiency, promote innovation, and strengthen economic development initiatives. These outcomes underscore Caricom’s collective resolve to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for all member states.
