- Father Gerard Paul injured in vehicular accident on Eastern Main Road
- Bishop Clyde Harvey earlier suspended Father Paul from priestly duties
- Metropolitan Archbishop of Castries Gabriel Malzaire upheld suspension
The Catholic Church in Grenada has confirmed that a priest was severely injured in a vehicular accident and has called on members of the Catholic community to pray for Father Gerard Paul.
“We asked you to join us in prayer for Father Gerard Paul who was hospitalised on Saturday evening after a serious accident at Hope, St Andrew. He has rib damage and is in severe pain. He was anointed and communed,” said a post on the church’s Facebook page on Sunday, 8 December 2024. “Let us pray for him fervently for full and speedy recovery in days to come.” The notice was posted hours after a vehicular accident between a special licenced truck and another vehicle on the Eastern Main Road.
The Traffic Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) has not issued a statement about the accident, but in photographs posted on social media platforms, an individual is seen lying on a gurney.
Earlier in the year, Bishop of the Diocese of St George’s in Grenada Clyde Harvey suspended Father Paul from his duties as a priest. The suspension was a matter of controversy between Paul and Harvey, but was settled when the two met with Metropolitan Archbishop of Castries Gabriel Malzaire.
In a statement after the meeting, Malzaire said that after considering many things and in the interest of maintaining “Right Order” in the Catholic Church, Father Paul’s suspension was upheld. He also made it clear that the authority of the Catholic Church has spoken on the matter, and everyone must now work towards rebuilding the Catholic community. Fr Paul has not been reinstated because his suspension has not been lifted.
Fr Paul is also the Managing Director of Spice Isle Imaging Centre Inc.
