For La Crette’s senatorial appointment, the notice said: “In exercise of the powers vested in me by Section 27 (2) (e) of the Constitution of Grenada, and acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister, I hereby direct that your appointment as Senator, dated 30th June 2022, be revoked.”
Both notices are dated 31 July 2024.
La Crette was one of 7 senators appointed by the Governor-General, acting in accordance with the advice of the Prime Minister. The Senate or Upper House of Parliament consists of 13 representatives, 7 of whom are appointed by the Prime Minister.
On 1 August, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell informed the nation during a news conference that he had asked the Governor-General to revoke La Crette’s appointment. No specific reason was given for the termination other than the Prime Minister having lost trust and confidence in the senator.
“The reason for doing so that as Prime Minister, sitting in the Cabinet I formed the view that I had personally lost trust and confidence in Minister La Crette in his capacity as a Minister and in those circumstances, I thought it was appropriate for me to inform him of that fact and to inform his fellow Cabinet colleagues,” Prime Minister Mitchell told reporters.
“I will not get involved into the nitty-gritty of the details; they are not appropriate given the fact that it is a trust and confidence issue,” he added.
