Men’s health and building good relationships were the focal points of a recent symposium for men working in the public sector in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The interactive session is one of the many events planned by the Department of Public Administration and managed by the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, in the run-up to International Public Service Day, observed by the United Nations on 23 June every year.

Retired urologist Dr Robert Yearwood, focusing on prostate cancer, highlighted the importance of men paying attention to their health. “Prostate cancer is the leading cause of death in men, but with early detection, they can live a normal life,” Dr Yearwood said.

The Director of Student Support Services in the Ministry of Education Pearson Stroude spoke about the important role men play in society. He advised them to be leaders and examples to younger men.

Dr Troy Davis, District Medical Doctor, spoke about diabetes as a chronic illness and the value of getting frequent check-ups. He also exhorted them to cease undervaluing their health.

Community Mental Health Nurse Annette Emmons stressed the importance of mutual support and the necessity to never presume to know what another person is going through.

Ade’s Dream Guesthouse, Paradise Beach Club, Jigger’s Entertainment, Osprey Lines, Jharm’s World, Creative Nails and Spa, and Senior Administrative Officer Dianne Stanislaus all provided support for the symposium.

The next activity in recognition of International Public Service Day will be an extravaganza at the Hillsborough Tennis Court on Friday, 14 June at 10 am. The public is invited.
