The Meteorological Services at the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA) has issued a flood and landslides warning as the northern part of Grenada reports several instances of flooding and landslides within the past 24 hours.
The Met Office said that the heavy rain is due to a shear line located over the northeastern part of Grenada and it has caused almost 2 inches of rain.
The midday report said that the weather will be “partly cloudy to cloudy with light to moderate rain, which may become heavy at times,” and people residing in the affected areas have turned to social media posting videos of rivers and drains overflowing into main and secondary roads.
The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) has issued a news release informing the general public and in particular motorists that due to heavy rainfall overnight and into this morning, several areas of the parishes of St Patrick and St Mark have been severely affected.
“Extensive floodings, landslides, and fallen trees have resulted in blockage of roads,” said the release. However, following the release, citizens began posting videos of flooding conditions in the town of Grenville, St Andrew.
“Until they are clear and safe, the general public is cautioned to avoid those areas and any other area which is affected or likely to be affected. Motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes to access their destinations,” said the release.
Ruth Roberts, Public Relations Officer at the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) said that a team from the agency is touring the affected areas to get a firsthand observation of the damage and that will determine the next step.
