Camper & Nicholsons Marinas, owners and operators of Port Louis Marina invites applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position of Berthmaster/Dockmaster.
General description of duties
Works as a member of a shift system providing the marina with operational and reception cover which includes attending to customers in a courteous, efficient and professional manner. Much time will be spent out of the office, assisting owners and their boats and attending to various checklist items such as maintenance and service duties.
Office duties will revolve around marina reception, booking-in visiting yachts, accepting payments, issuing keys and work permits, handling new business enquiries, dealing with VHF traffic, etc.
Specific responsibilities
- Assisting owners and crews with yacht berthing, especially when weather/tide conditions are unfavourable. To include towing and line work with the marina workboat. Assisting owners and crews with car parking, baggage handling and such other tasks as they may reasonably request
- Checking berth occupancy and licence validity, monitoring electricity/water usage
- Carrying out routine repairs and maintenance
- Cleaning and tidying buildings (including washrooms/toilets when no cleaner is on duty), pontoons, quays and the marina site and workplaces generally to maintain a high standard of hygiene and appearance
- Enforcing the Marina Rules
- Where appropriate, operation of fuel dock including all relevant procedures when no fuel dock attendant is on duty
- Booking in yachts, allocating berths, issuing berthing licences and invoices, receiving payments (including cash) and issuing receipts
- Resolve customers’ queries and complaints in a professional and courteous manner
- Produce all relevant reports as directed by management
- Immediately and warmly greet each customer both in and out of office with a smile and provide accurate information on the marina’s products and services
- Liaising with officials (e.g. Police, Customs, Immigration) issuing keys and security passes, monitoring security (including security rounds at night), answering telephone and personal enquiries, operating the VHF, maintaining diaries and records and generally attending to such Marina Reception duties as may be reasonably required. Some of the above work may involve use of a computerised marina management system
- Complying with the company’s Health and Safety Policy and other issued procedures and guidelines and with recognised good working practices, and seeing that others do so
- Complying with marina regulations regarding dress and expected modes of behaviour and using best endeavours at all times to offer a personal and personable service to customers and to enhance the reputation of the marina
- Assisting with boat handling and boatyard operations (e.g. boat hoist) where appropriate
- Ensuring that boats in the marina are at all times properly and sufficiently moored and protected with fenders and that neither mooring lines, electricity cables, boat overhangs or any other thing cause a hazard on pontoons or quays
- Complying with all marina systems and procedures
- Assisting at special events, exhibitions and promotions
- Assisting the management and other staff in such other matters as may be reasonably required
- As with all members of staff, the Berthmaster is always on call in times of emergency or severe weather
- Ability to work as a member of a close-knit team; Self-motivated and with the ability to work with limited supervision
- To be physically fit
Qualification and Experience
- A minimum of 5 CXC or GCE subjects
- A good general knowledge of boats, boat handling, knots, etc.
- Proficient swimmer
- A valid driver’s licence
Other Requirements
- Good IT skills, Microsoft Word
- Good interpersonal skills — the marina is a hospitality business. The correct customer service attitudes are essential
- Ability to work as a member of a close-knit team and alone as required
- Foreign language an advantage
Salary – negotiable based on qualifications and experience
