“The Incident” is the first short film directed by the Trinidad-based American Emily Smart, which she produced with her Trinidadian husband, Cedric Smart.
Both have been in the industry for decades, within other areas of the craft, but this is their first venture together in producing a film. This short film premiered at The Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival in 2022 and has gone on to play at 12°N, 61°W Film Festival; Toronto Black Film Festival; Crescent City Film Festival; Caribbean Lens Film Festival, and Flow Film Festival, where the film won Best Supernatural Short Film. The Awards Ceremony took place Sunday, 28 May.
The film stars newcomer Frances Smart alongside veteran actresses Penelope Spencer and Chanel Quesnal (née Glasgow). In the film, young Iona is led into the forest by a supernatural being and gets lost. She ends up coming across another supernatural being, but this one is far more dangerous. Iona’s Granny Sarah senses her granddaughter is in danger and she swoops in to save her.
This film is a piece of a backstory to the feature film called “Shadow Legacy”, which takes place 27 years after the short film. The film has Nickelodeon TeenNick’s DeGrassi: The Next Generation actress Melinda Shankar attached and we are looking for investors to help us make this film a reality.
Two of the Executive Producers of the film are Grenadian Garvey Louison and Grenada-based Trinidadian Andy Smart. Louison and Smart have collaborated with the Smart team on several initiatives, including an upcoming movie to be filmed in Grenada. Such collaborations bode well for the future of filmmaking in Grenada.
