Dengue fever poses a significant threat to individuals of all ages, particularly the elderly and young children. However, this preventable illness can be avoided if we collectively take necessary steps and responsibility for our surroundings.
The Grenada Green Group has been tirelessly working to address the issue of litter in our communities. One critical aspect of litter that demands immediate attention is the improper disposal of used tyres. These discarded tyres when left in open spaces, can collect rainwater, creating an ideal breeding ground for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the carrier of Dengue fever. This illness brings about symptoms such as fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, and weakness. While most people recover within a week, the vulnerable, especially the elderly and very young, face increased risks and, in severe cases, death.
It is incumbent upon each one of us to ensure that our properties are free from any objects that could collect rainwater. Even a small amount of water is sufficient for mosquitoes to breed and multiply rapidly.
By taking simple yet effective measures, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from the threat of dengue fever:
- Remove stagnant water sources: Regularly inspect your surroundings and remove any containers, buckets, or items that can hold water. Empty and clean pet dishes, plant saucers, and discarded containers promptly
- Dispose of used tyres properly: Avoid discarding tyres in open spaces, where they can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes
- Maintain clean gutters and drains: Ensure that gutters and drains are free of debris to prevent water accumulation
- Cover and seal water storage containers: Use appropriate lids or covers for water storage containers, including tanks, barrels, and buckets, to prevent mosquitoes from accessing them
- Use mosquito nets and repellents: Use bed nets treated with insecticide to protect infants and young children from mosquito bites. Apply insect repellents or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin
- Educate and raise awareness: Share information about dengue fever prevention with family, friends, and neighbours. Encourage others to be vigilant in eliminating potential breeding sites
By collectively adopting these preventive measures, we can significantly reduce the risk of Dengue fever transmission and protect our communities’ health and well-being.
