Carnival band Nirvana revealed its 2023 presentation for Spicemas, “The World is Yours,” making them the first band to launch in Grenada.

The virtual band launch took place on their social media pages on Friday, 3 March 2023, reaching over 15,000 people, while the showroom simultaneously opened its doors to eager masqueraders at the Reno Complex on Kirani James Boulevard.

“After travelling to 6 of the 7 continents around the world, I was inspired to capture their essence through mas. While contemplating the future of Nirvana, we decided that this was a good creative direction for 2023 especially given that we would finally be able to fully experience Spicemas as we know it,” said Sunshine Harley, owner of Nirvana.

Nirvana-2023: Sydney, Frontline

Nirvana’s 2023 carnival presentation comprises 7 sections, each representing a continent. The sections are Lemaire for Antarctica; Keha for North America; Komodo for Asia; Sydney for Australia; Ndebele for Africa; Kuzco for South America, and Lisse for Europe. The costumes have been designed to reflect the beauty, diversity, and culture of each continent.

Nirvana 2023: Ndbele, Frontline

All sections are currently on display at the Nirvana Showroom, which will remain open until Carnival Tuesday. Nirvana’s masqueraders can choose among deluxe, frontline, and backline costumes for women, 2 unique costumes for men, plus customisations with early registration. The costumes range in style and pricing to suit the preferences of masqueraders, and registration is currently open on Nirvana’s website, www.nirvanaempire.com.

Nirvana 2023: Ndebele, Male

Sunshine Harley, the owner of Nirvana, has designed 6 of the seven costumes. As a first-time designer, she faced challenges in the early stages, but her desire to provide masqueraders with a unique experience fueled her creativity. She looks forward to the day when there are more Grenadian designers of carnival costumes and believes that this can be achieved through education.

The Nirvana Experience promises to be the perfect state of happiness on the road Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It includes:

  • Carnival costume
  • Monday wear
  • Meals on both days
  • Premium bar with unlimited alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
  • Mobile restrooms
  • Cool-down bus
  • Private security team
  • Roaming photographer and videographer
  • Souvenir bag with carnival essentials
  • Entertainment
Nirvana 2023: Keha, Frontline

Nirvana was publicly launched in February 2020, but due to the pandemic, they paraded for the first time during Spicemas 2022. The carnival band has been a significant contributor to the community and has hosted an annual back-to-school drive that supports students across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique who are transitioning from primary school to secondary school.

Nirvana is excited to present “The World is Yours” and invites masqueraders to revel in Grenada on 14–15 August 2023.

Nirvana was an American rock band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Founded by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, the band went through a succession of drummers, most notably Chad Channing, and then recruited Dave Grohl in 1990

All nice but we seems to spend a great deal of time and money on these yearly events that only generate revenue for a selective few .
As much as support carnival which is a good event for the island and the people involved we have to remember that we have other areas that need urgent attention like our education and health sector.

      Totally agree with you.

In the name of arts and culture, a handful gets to exploit and reap benefits.

During my high school years there nothing about wire bending or anything to do with artform. The lack of arts and culture in the school had to with teachers who allow their religion to project artform and culture as ungodly. The artform was/is painted as bad and that is wrong. It was the same thing colonial powers did.

NONE of the women used thise MOBILE TOILETS instead they pissed in Tanteen playing field. How about more clothing in the women’s costumes or they may as well just go naked down the street. Make the men wear only jock straps and a bum ribbon, and then give them directions to do lewd movements behind the trucks. Carnival is just a big drunk with everyone passing wherever they can in public, JABJAB causing alot if pollution and filth in the ocean leaving greasy, oily clothing behind for someone else to clean up and polluting the ocean. These MEN selling costumes asking for the expensive feathered wings back which I am sure are just sold over again.
SPICE MAS a huge, DISORGANISED mess in 2022, schedules not followed, nothing starts on time. Give us some if the original bands instead of naked women. I will never recommend Carnival in Grenada to anyone.
