What about the age range of deaths? Did they have comorbidities. Because patients of higher age and with preexisting chronic health conditions are at an increased risk of dying from Covid.
Good, more information in the numbers. Recoveries 3417 + fully vaccinated 23980. We building resistance. Another 10402 hopefully soon with full protection.
These new figures for the vaccination status of Covid deaths don’t really tell us much. Superficially there have been 4 deaths in fully vaccinated persons (2.9% of 139) compared with 134 deaths in unvaccinated persons (96.4%). This would mean an unvaccinated individual is 33.24 times more likely to die from Covid than a fully vaccinated individual. But since there are many more unvaccinated than vaccinated individuals in Grenada, we would expect more deaths to be in the unvaccinated anyway. But how much more is the question. What we really need to compare is the rate of deaths from the pools of vaccinated versus unvaccinated individuals.
Current data for Grenada appear to show that 4 deaths have occurred from a population of 23,980 fully vaccinated people whilst 134 deaths have occurred in the unvaccinated population of 75,618 – plus 1 death (0.7% of total deaths) in a first-dose-only population of 10,402. And assuming a total national population of 110,000.
This means that the rate of death in the fully vaccinated is 0.17 per 1000. The rate in the unvaccinated is 1.77 per 1000. So the unvaccinated are 10.5 times more likely to die of Covid than the vaccinated. And this is only half the story because it lumps all age groups together. If we had age stratified mortality data we would see a steep gradient in risk of death as age increases – as shown in other countries. Younger age groups would show little difference in death rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated but older groups would show a hugely greater risk – maybe 30-50 times greater in the over 50’s. And that’s just deaths! Serious illness and long term damage to organs are also greatly reduced by vaccination. And the longer the virus is rampant the greater the chance of new genetic variants as it reproduces.
The implication is simple. Get vaccinated! It doesn’t hurt and it’s totally safe: over 5.5 billion doses have been administered worldwide. Soon you won’t be able to travel without it and you may even lose your job. But even if that doesn’t persuade you remember that this is a national emergency and we must all do out bit to reduce it. Be fair to others and yourself by getting proven protection. Now, not next week!
Thanks for making the death rate clearer!
Only thing missing from this data is vaccinations on a daily basis & also daily deaths. I know I can work it out myself but it would be better if it was highlighted with the rest of the information.
Much better break down of information once you get used to the way vaccinated numbers are expressed.
Vaccinated are now shown as first dose ONLY 10,402 & fully vaccinated 23,980, before first doses also included those who have had second doses also. The percentage figure refers to percentage of DEATHS that are fully, partly or unvaccinated.
Slightly disagree. This new presentation tends to obscure the daily number of new vaccinations, since some number of daily vaxes will be second doses. Just tracking the daily change in vaccinations will not tell you how many are “new” unless you subtract out the prior day’s increase in “second” doses. Doable, but why make this difficult?
The rate of “new” vaccinations, I believe, is a key forward-looking metric is assessing how we are doing in fighting the disease. As has been pointed out many times by others, “new cases” “tests administered” and “positivity rate” are all subject to sampling error and subjectivity. “Deaths” is a lagging indicator. Can the MoH simply publish daily the number of “1st” and “2nd” doses administered since the prior day. That will give us a clear picture of how we are doing, and if we need to be doing better. Please get vaccinated as soon as you can. Encourage everyone you know to do the same.
Now I don’t understand the numbers at all. The percentage of vaccinated does not correspond with the number at all
This is what they do: Talk about percentages and not in real numbers. The total first and second doses administered clearly do not add up to 58,362. Someone needs a calculator. What an embarrassment!
(23,980 x 2 doses) + 10,402 = 58,362 total vaccine doses
