The Grenada Tourism Authority (GTA) Board of Directors welcomes the recent press release by the Government of Grenada (GoG) highlighting the fact that the arbitration between Government and WRB is now settled, and work can now begin as it relates to the process of energy sector reform.
The GTA is well aware of the implications high energy costs can have on the overall success of the tourism industry. Compared with other destinations, the cost of energy in Grenada has a disproportionately high impact on room rates thus making the destination less competitive and more price inelastic. In order for us to market our nation as a world-class destination, our service providers have to be able to produce without being burdened with high energy costs. This in turn should lead to benefits like more profitable hotels; higher wages for workers; more money for training and reinvestment in upgrades and expansion.
We also welcome the potential thrust towards more renewable energy being a major objective of this reform. Grenada’s Pure Grenada brand is predicated on a clean and pristine environment and as such renewable energy should be a major part of this.
The renewable sector also has the potential to attract more “green tourists” who are increasingly more concerned about the carbon footprint being left by tourism. Finally, this should also enable Government to access more green climate funding which can lead to investment in major capital projects which impact tourism. We hope that our operators no matter size or niche, are able to take advantage of these new reforms to ensure long term sustainability.

There was leniency before, people were asked to behave like and were treated like adults. But alas. the current conditions are evolutions of the original conditions ammended to correct loopholes, breeches by persons who disregard the law, laws made to keep them safe. You do know that the tests are not free. No reason why the person utilizing the services cannot and shouldn’t pay for it. Investment in renewables and the fact that arbitration is over IS GOOD NEWS. The LCOE of renewables is low so if cost are lowered and margins are bigger then the projects with a guaranteed market pays for themselves. It’s called, listen carefully, l-o-n-g t-e-r-m i- v-e-s-t-m-e-n-t. The fact that arbitration I over means that investors can come in with a heightened sense of security knowing that macro and idiosyncratic risks have been mitigated. Risks that would otherwise make investment here unprofitable. Please do your homework before just mouthing off the rubbish and using this platform to express your political pitched, senseless, conspiracy theories.
Rubbish. How is the Government going to recapture its US$63 million investment while at the same time introduce a competing supply of renewable energy? How can both things be done and one not impinge on the other? And renewable energy will require even more investment in plant and equipment. Talk about an illogical GTA statement! Rubbish….

Where is your STATEMENT on the ridiculous fee of $150USD for a Covid test?? EH?? Go back to proper quarantine pf 14 days and NOT at your hotel of choice. If persons have accommodation that meets the restriction of isolation from the general population then that should be allowed. Checking and monitoring of these person would still happen. No need to treat your Visitors / Tourist or Locals with GEO FENCING at their expense!! What kind of stupidness is this? Do you actually want the Tourism sector to come back to Grenada? Better you shut the doors again until Covid is wiped out. You deliberately let in Chinese Diplomats, did they spend 14 days in QUARANTINE??? I bet NOT.
