Preparations are well underway for Grenada’s 30th Celebration of Thanksgiving Day, said members of the National Celebrations Committee at a recent Media Conference at the Ministry of Tourism.
Celebrated under the theme “Thirty years of Peace and Stability; bringing families together,” this year’s celebrations will be the first time ever that the 1983 intervention and its surrounding events will be commemorated by a week of activities that will run from October 19 to 25, 2013.
“We have decided not only to commemorate the 25th of October but to have a week of activities, since this is a very important milestone in Grenada’s history,” Chairman of the National Celebrations Committee, Dr. Julie Dubois said at the Conference.
Distinct to past thanksgiving celebrations, this year the Committee will memorialize the 1983 events, as well as place great emphasis on rejoicing over the three decades of peace that the country has experienced since that time.
Speaking on this year’s initiatives, the Hon. Brenda Hood, Parliamentary Secretary with Responsibility for Culture says that she commends the National Celebrations Committee for working so aggressively to ensure that this year’s celebration is unique and encourages everyone to get involved in the activities planned.
“We are asking all Grenadians to celebrate thanksgiving with a difference; as a family event. After attending the church service on the 25th, celebrate in your various constituencies, go on the beach, do something enjoyable. We have a lot to give thanks to God for, especially for bringing us this far,”
The week of celebration will include several new events such as a museum exhibition, a school quiz, media appearances and testimonials among other activities.
A nation-wide ringing of church bells and sirens, as well as a wreath –laying ceremony on Fort George occurs on October 19 and a Thanksgiving Service at the St. John’s Anglican Church, a Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Wilberforce Cemetery and an afternoon of community activities culminate the celebrations on October 25th.
