For the second year, the National Ozone Unit in the Energy Division of the Ministry of Finance and Energy, has partnered with local non-governmental organisation GRENCASE — the Grenada Citizen Advise and Small Business Agency — to provide training for young and aspiring refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians.

The 8-week training exercise will focus on refrigeration and air-conditioning fundamentals, with particular emphasis on good refrigeration practices. This training is part of Grenada’s Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) Phase-out Management Plan (HPMP). It is funded by the Multilateral Fund Secretariat of the Montreal Protocol, through implementing agency UNEP, the United Nations Environment Programme.

Fourteen participants were enrolled into the training programme, during a brief orientation session on Tuesday 22 April, attended by Managing Director of GRENCASE, Selby Henry, Leslie Smith of the National Ozone Unit and programme tutor, Henry Frederick.

Smith gave an overview of Grenada’s obligations under the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone Layer and the relationship with the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry.  He encouraged the participants to grasp this opportunity with “both hands” to empower themselves to become self-employed in tough economic times.

The training programme is expected to be completed on 12 June. Successful participants will be provided with a certificate of achievement.
