The British High Commission in St George’s through the UK Government’s Climate Diplomacy Fund handed over 3 solar-powered water heaters to the Ministry of Social Development to support residential homes by creating more environmentally friendly spaces.
The Father Maligan Home for Boys, Cedars Home for Abused Women and their Children and St Martins Home for the Aged were the recipients.
The benefit of this project is 2-fold as it not only reduces energy consumption cost but also supports the use of renewable energy. Receiving these systems was Senior Programme Officer (Ag.) in the Ministry of Social Development, Feona Sandy. She said, “Since the British High Commission opened their office here in Grenada, they have been establishing strong partnerships locally. The Ministry is thankful for this support to the homes. I am hopeful that other partners can get on board to emulate these sponsorships and donations.”
Political Officer at the British High Commission, Deborah Cudjoe said, “The British High Commission is quite pleased to support residential homes through the Ministry of Social Development. Climate change and the Environment remains a priority of the UK Government as it prepares to host COP26 later on this year. I am certain that these systems will be put into good use as one has already been installed. Initiatives that support the environment and help build resilience are integral in addressing the climate challenges that we all face.”
