Concerns over corporal punishment in schools

Local NGOs are expressing concerns regarding a statement made by the Ministry of Education representative on the issue of corporal punishment.

As part of the Child Month initiative during a broadcast on Monday, 14 October 2019 on the Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN) Mid-Morning Buzz programme, it was stated that there was a place for “flogging/corporal punishment.”

This statement is of deep concern as the Ministry of Education is meant to be working towards the abolishment of corporal punishment in schools.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) clearly states that all forms of abuse including corporal punishment are a violation of children’s rights.

Several past reports have recommended to the State that it should take all necessary steps to abolish corporal punishment in schools, homes and the penal system.

We strongly believe that corporal punishment contributes to the violence and abuse which plagues our society.

We call on the government through the Ministry of Education to ensure that the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (which Grenada ratified in 1999) be adhered to.

We must continue to debate this topic as information must reach the masses on the long term damage to children who are punished by this method. Your views are culturally motivated.. parents and guardian believe they have a right to physically punish. We should not take pleasure in administering this punishment without no consideration for the rights of the child. There are other ways of disciplining and we could research those as many of us have access to information in the palm of our hands.
You mention America, a country which has not ratified the CRC.
It is over 35 years ago since Sweden abolished corporal punishment in their society. Do your research and look at their crime rates.
If we do not look at changing…. we will reap the consequences.Don’t complain about the monsters when it rears it’s ugly head.

Useless CRC and other NGOs. When OUR children go astray its not your heartless hearts that bleed. No one on the face of Gods’ green earth will tell me not to administer corporal punishment if and when it becomes necessary. I completely agree with Mr Steele and Mrs Sylvester. Don’t you people see that great ( not so great) America have replaced corporal punishment by parents with gun carrying kids ? They are now crying out for its’ return. You people need to take a long rest and clean your overeducated minds. You don’t know the difference between discipline and abuse go learn before its too late for you. And in my home, house and dwelling? Come for yu share!!! DON’T GO THERE!!!

We strongly believe that corporal punishment contributes to the violence and abuse which plagues our society.

Are you kidding me! Is this saying that there was more crime and violence 30 40, 50 years ago when parents, neighbours, bigger siblings and teachers use to discipline with the strap?

Are you not aware of what is happening in places where flogging of children is prohibited?

We profess to be a Christian society listen to the wise man Solomon.
    Proverbs 22:15 NLT
A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness but physical discipline will drive it far away.

    Proverbs 13:24
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him diligently.

    Proverbs 23:14
Strike him with a rod, and you will deliver his soul from hell.

    Proverbs 29:15
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.

We must see this “rights of the child” campaign for what it is…. The plan of Satan to take control of our children.

I am totally against abuse of our children. There is however, an age in their development when flogging is necessary. The issue should not be flog or not to flog but when and how to flog.
Upon the first offence a child should be spoken to explaining why the behavior is unacceptable, what the correct behavior is and then end with prayer by child and disciplinarian asking God to help the child to change.
If the child persist in the behavior then the rod of correction comed into play. The flogging must be administered with love and the disciplinarian should not beat in anger, and a vexed Spirit. Hug the child after and affirm your love and your desire to see him grow to be a model citizen for Earth and Heaven.

“Abolish corporal punishment in home” …… PLEASE DON’T GO THERE!

NGO’s read your Bible and apply the principles of child rearing found there and teach the nation likewise.

Minister of Education there is a place for flogging……stand your ground.

Sorry that should be Ministry of Education Representative.

Stop justifying abuse with the bible. Not everything in the bible is true. God Never said to hit our children. Do your research!! You disgust me and this inhumane method doesn’t change anything. Only fear and pain I see

we shouldn’t talk about the rights of the child, without talking about
the responsibility of the child. A clear distinction should be made
between disciplining a child and abusing a child. It seems that in
modern times the child is given the all the rights over the parents.
I will argue that this is partly to be blamed for escalation in the
deviant behavior manifested by our young people today.
