Winston Frederick, the Former Member of Parliament for St Patrick East, will receive an official funeral service and burial next week Friday.
Known as Winty, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives when he served in the House from 1990 to 1995 having won the seat as a member of the then opposition Grenada United Labour Party.
The 70 year died at the General Hospital last week Tuesday. According to rules of courtesies extended to former parliamentarians, his family will receive assistance to the tune of EC$20,000.
The official funeral will be held at the Mt Rose Seventh Day Adventist Church at 11:00 am and will involve tributes from organizations and individuals to be followed by the funeral service. The band of the Royal Grenada Police Force and other units within the force will be leading the procession to the burial ground.
Following the 1995 election, Winty migrated to the USA and returned after 10 years. Following his return in 2005 openly supported the New National Party, but within months he launched his own People’s United Labour Party — a new political party promising to improve the socio-economic well being of Grenadians.
He was the only candidate for his party for the 19 February 2013 general election and received a total of 11 votes.
In recent weeks, Alimenta Bishop, the Mother of former Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, also received an official funeral. As former Governor-General, Sir Paul Scoon received a state funeral.
