All primary schools across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique will soon have fully functioning libraries through the work of GND Schools Inc.
GND Schools Inc otherwise known as Grenada Schools, has partnered with Savvy Grenada to help finance the renovation and refurbishment of primary school libraries. Savvy Grenada has donated EC$53,400 to GND Schools Inc to support their literacy project. The official cheque presentation was made at Mount Cinnamon Grenada Hotel by General Manager, Mark Kitchen, on Friday, 29 September 2017.
Savvy Grenada is the parent company in charge of Peter de Savary’s projects in Grenada, including Mount Cinnamon, Azzurra Castle and Port Louis Marina.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Director at Savvy Grenada, Barry Collymore was enthusiastic about the partnership with GND Schools and the opportunity to contribute to the development of literacy among young learners. Collymore said the company is not just into developing hotels but also developing society. He further stated that Savvy Grenada looks forward to doing more in the future to contribute to this literacy initiative:
“The Grenada Schools initiative is really an important one. It’s unique in that it is focusing on children reading, which is a skill that is lacking today. Everybody is focusing on screens and electronics, which do form a part of reading, but we’re not reading enough, we’re not doing enough research, we’re not writing enough. So, we’re very happy to support an initiative which is indeed supporting reading and education.”
Receiving the donation on behalf of GND Schools, Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Phillip expressed heartfelt appreciation for the generous donation by Savvy Grenada, saying that their donation will greatly help with financing the work ahead.
To date, 13 primary school libraries have been successfully enhanced through renovations, expansions or by building a new library from ground zero. Curriculum materials have also been developed, along with robust teacher training given to primary school teachers.
GND Schools Inc is working in collaboration with a worldwide non-profit organisation, Room to Read and the Ministry of Education & Human Resource Development to deliver its project: ‘Strengthening the Foundations for Early Literacy in Grenada.’ The main donors of GND Schools Inc are Michael and Melanie Sherwood of the United Kingdom and local trustees include Leo Garbutt, Lyden Ramdhanny and Jason Roberts.
