Caricom welcomes Adoption of UN Resolution

On Slavery and Transatlantic Trafficking of Enslaved Africans

The Caribbean Community (Caricom) welcomes the adoption of the historic United Nations resolution: Declaration of the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans as the Gravest Crime Against Humanity, by the UN General Assembly on 25 March 2026.

All Caricom Member States voted in favour of the Ghana-led Resolution.

The resolution declares transatlantic trafficking and chattel enslavement as humanity’s gravest crime due to scale, duration, brutality and lasting consequences; calls for the establishment of reparations frameworks; emphasises remembrance, research and education; and promotes healing and justice.

Caricom has consistently advocated for the international community to take decisive action to repair the harmful legacies of African chattel enslavement and transatlantic trafficking, and will continue to work collaboratively for the implementation of the resolution.

The resolution was symbolically adopted on the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, marked annually on 25 March.
