The Governments of Grenada and the Republic of The Gambia formally established diplomatic relations as of 18 June 2025, marking a significant advancement in Grenada’s endeavours to strengthen cooperation with the African region.
This is particularly significant as Grenada prepares to host the 2025 Afri-Caribbean Trade and Investment Forum in July.
The signing ceremony took place in London and was signed on behalf of the Government of Grenada by Her Excellency Rachér Croney, High Commissioner for Grenada to the United Kingdom, and on behalf of the Republic of The Gambia, Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of The Gambia to the United Kingdom.
The establishment of diplomatic ties underscores the growing need to expand global engagement and unlock new opportunities for cooperation in key sectors. This milestone also reflects an aspiration to foster strategic international partnerships that are governed by shared values, development priorities, and mutual respect.
Grenada and The Gambia envision robust collaboration in the areas of education and youth empowerment, agriculture and food security, climate resilience, tourism and culture, trade and investment, public health, and digital innovation. This partnership also provides opportunities for mutual growth through knowledge exchange, capacity building, and cultural diplomacy.
High Commissioner Croney stated, “The establishment of diplomatic relations with The Gambia is a meaningful extension of Grenada’s foreign policy goals, especially as we seek to build a relationship with the African nations that share our development ambitions. This partnership is a testament to our shared heritage, people-to-people connections, and unwavering commitment to collaborative progress on the global stage.”
Her Excellency Dr Bensouda echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The Republic of The Gambia is delighted to formalise diplomatic relations with Grenada, a fellow small state with whom we share common values of unity, resilience, and ambition. We look forward to creating tangible linkages between our people and exploring joint initiatives in education, climate action, tourism, and trade.” The Gambia, a stable and reform-oriented democracy in West Africa, presents a compelling ally in advancing Grenada’s interests in innovation, governance, and sustainable development. The signing of the joint communique further illustrates a collective determination to forge inclusive, cross-regional partnerships that advance sustainable development and amplify the voices of small states in global affairs.
Grenada welcomes this partnership and is committed to building a dynamic and enduring relationship with the Republic of The Gambia. Our engagement with the global south solidifies the country’s commitment to diversifying its diplomatic and economic partnerships. This signing comes less than one month later, following the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in May.
