The Spicemas Corporation (SMC) held the first in a series of judges’ workshops for the 2025 Carnival season on Saturday, 24 May at the Olympic Centre, Morne Rouge.

The informative 5-hour training saw 29 prospective judges engaging in interaction sessions led by facilitator Colin Dowe.

Day one focused on foundational principles and general judging ethics, use of the scoring sheets, core judging principles and an introduction to all judging categories: Power Soca, Groovy Soca, Calypso, Traditional and Fancy Mas.

The workshops are held annually in an effort to improve judging accuracy and consistency across all events and create a standardised understanding of competition criteria, while upholding the integrity of all major Spicemas competitions.

Two other sessions will be held on Saturday, 31 May and 7 June as the SMC strives to enhance the knowledge of all judges involved in national events.
