Since children often mimic what they see, the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) advises parents and guardians to make physical activities fun, reduce sedentary lifestyles, and enjoy healthy family meals.

Encouraging these habits within the family unit can inspire lasting change and set a foundation for healthier living. Studies indicate that pairing physical activity with healthier eating habits is more effective for preventing excess weight gain than focusing solely on diet. Therefore, active play not only aids in managing weight but also fosters lifelong habits of movement and overall well-being.

Parents and caregivers can set an example by prioritising physical movement during family time. Instead of spending hours on sedentary activities like playing video games, marathon movie watching, or scrolling on mobile devices, they can encourage children to see physical activity as a normal part of family life. Whether indoors or outdoors, families can create lasting memories while boosting their health and happiness through engaging activities that benefit everyone’s well-being. Below are some exciting games that the whole family can enjoy together. Before long, everyone will be laughing, sweating, and strengthening bone density — all while having a great time:

  1. Musical Chairs
  2. Red Light, Green Light 1-2-3
  3. Chinese Skip
  4. Jump Rope
  5. Hop Scotch
  6. Simon Says
  7. Tag

Tip: Write down the goals and track progress together using a fun chart or journal.

Besides engaging in family activities, parents and guardians can reach out to schools or community groups to enroll their children in structured physical activities.

  1. Swimming
  2. Rugby
  3. Football (soccer)
  4. Dance classes
  5. Martial arts, like karate or taekwondo
  6. Netball
  7. Tennis
  8. Track and Field

GFNC also suggests that understanding and learning about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices can be a family activity as well. Making health education a family affair, whether through watching short videos, reading books, or cooking wholesome meals together, again makes this lifestyle choice eventually second nature. Extended family members such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins also play crucial roles in shaping a child’s habits.

With childhood obesity on the rise, taking proactive measures is essential. Parents and guardians have a unique opportunity to lead by example because children are more likely to emulate behaviours they see from their caregivers. When families unite and embrace healthier living, they become a powerful force for lasting change.

To keep track of GFNC’s efforts and receive frequent visual resources about healthy eating and nutrition practices follow GFNC’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
