Government has reconstituted the Board of Directors of the Grenada National Museum (GNM), and well-known artist and sociologist Dr Oliver Benoit has been named as chairman for a 2-year period beginning 1 October 2024.
“Cabinet at its meeting of 28th October 2024 approved the reconstitution of the Board of Directors for the Grenada National Museum effective 1st October 2024, for a period of two (2) years,” said a government notice published in the 29 November edition of the Government Gazette.
The Grenada National Museum Act, 2017 states that the board shall be vested with the management, control and administration of the National Museum. The other members of the board who will serve from October 2024 to October 2026 are:
Kay Julien-Gutu, Deputy Chair; Akino Romain, Alicia La Touche, Ryan Bullen, Kelvin Jacob in his capacity as Chief Cultural Officer; representatives from the Grenada National Trust and the Grenada Cultural Foundation, and the Executive Director of the Museum who shall be the Ex Officio.
According to the act establishing the museum as a statutory body, the board shall make policy directives for the manner in which the functions of the National Museum are to be performed. Policy directives will include the establishment of a National Collections Policy and all other policies required for the facilitation of the operations of the National Museum; research and excavation of historical and cultural material relevant to the national collection.
The board members shall also provide directives about the collection and dissemination of information relating to the national collection, and to the museum and its functions through delivery, receipt, declassification, withdrawal, disposal, review of and access to public records. The board shall always develop and enforce directives about exhibiting Grenada’s historical and cultural material in Grenada and abroad, and proper keeping and control of the finances of the National Museum.
Functions of the museum include but are not limited to securing, receiving, preserving, holding and displaying specimens, artefacts, and other materials that illustrate the natural or human history of Grenada and to serve as an educational organisation.
