The United Nations in Grenada, as well as grantees and beneficiaries of its initiatives, has joined the Government of Grenada in commemoration of United Nations Day.
This year’s UN Day celebration highlighted Grenada’s 50th anniversary in the UN and the government’s efforts to achieve the SDGs. The event featured flag presentations, strategic plan discussions, and interactive booths, showcasing UN initiatives in Grenada.
In a UN Day message from Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country’s commitment to the role and value of the UN was clearly articulated, as follows: “As we reflect on these 5 decades [of Grenada’s UN membership], the United Nations has been a steadfast partner in this journey. Through its agencies and initiatives, the UN has provided vital support, helping us overcome challenges and achieve critical development milestones. Looking ahead, we must reaffirm our dedication to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.”
Kennedy Roberts, Grenada’s SDG Ambassador, further emphasised the crucial role of partnerships and public awareness for the Global Goals. As the event went live on Facebook and YouTube, planning teams from government ministries and agencies showcased their innovative, inclusive approaches to education, climate resilience, and strengthening inter-ministerial data management for national security. This was an opportune moment to inform the public of the whole-of-government alignment of programmes and initiatives to the SDGs and the UN call for building a brighter, more sustainable future globally.
Simon Springett, UN Resident Coordinator for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean spoke of the enormous responsibility that we all must work together to support citizens and communities and leave no one behind when facing our multiple regional and global challenges. The recorded message from the Resident Coordinator highlighted United Nations Day as “a day to celebrate and to support a vision of an inclusive, networked, and effective multilateral system to better respond and deliver for people and planet, including across the Caribbean, towards a world of peace, sustainable development, and human rights for all.”
Presentations conveyed the alignment of specific SDG indicators to plans, policies, and programs. Grantees and beneficiaries shared how UN support transformed their businesses with eco-friendly practices and ways of working, while SDG quiz winners were awarded exclusive SDG-branded gifts.
The United Nations came into existence 79 years ago with the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, and Grenada became a member on 17 September 1974.
