Rodney George, in February 2023, retired from Wärtsilä after more than 33 years with the company, and was appointed to serve on the Grenlec Board in July 2022. He is now the chairman of that Board.
He was appointed following the recent resignation of Benedict Brathwaite who was appointed in July 2022. His appointment was among the first new appointees of the Dickon Mitchell Administration.
There has been no publication in the Government Gazette announcing that the Grenlec board was reconstituted, but Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell disclosed this during an interview with the Government Information Service (GIS) on 26 September 2023. The other members of the Board are Lazarus Antoine, Allan Bierzynski, Dorsett Cromwell, James Pitt, Cyril Roberts, Andrea St Bernard, and Hugh Thomas.
In an interview with GIS following the presentation of the Throne Speech by Governor-General Dame Cécile La Grenade to mark the commencement of the 2nd session of the 11th Parliament, the Prime Minister said that George was the new chairman of Grenlec. He also shared the names on the committee recently established to investigate the status of Grenada’s oil and gas exploration/drilling.
The Prime Minister said that there is no information available about the status of the drilling exploration which was conducted by Global Petroleum Group (GPG) in 2017/2018. GPG is known to have signed an agreement with the National Gas Company (NGC) of Trinidad & Tobago to cooperate in the energy sector.
Former Energy Minister Gregory Bowen had announced that the company was experiencing financial challenges after the first drilling and could not continue the exploration for more wells, but the company has since entered into a partnership with an unknown Chinese company.
GPG was registered in Grenada in 2003 and listed as having one hundred million shares. As of December 2017, the Belizean company, Multiple Investments Ltd, was listed as a shareholder.
