The New National Party (NNP) is deeply concerned with the current government’s handling of the low-income housing project, an effort initially pioneered by the previous administration under the astute leadership of Dr Keith Mitchell.
The initial design of this programme was a beacon of hope, a pact of trust between the government and the vulnerable citizens of Grenada. This housing project, generously supported by the People’s Republic of China, was conceived to provide a roof over the heads of the needy without burdening them financially.
However, the present National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has shamelessly morphed this altruistic initiative into a profit-making venture, betraying the very essence of its origin. The current dispensation is selling these homes at exorbitant prices, a blatant deviation from the original intent of providing affordable shelter to the impoverished. The asking price of over $50,000 for a one-bedroom apartment and over $70,000 for a 2-bedroom apartment, is a mockery of the indigent citizens’ plight.
Furthermore, the impractical timeline of 2 weeks given to potential homeowners to secure financing from banks or credit unions is an added strain. The reality on the ground is that mortgage approvals in Grenada exceed this unrealistic timeframe, not to mention the required 5% to 10% down payment, which is yet another financial hurdle. This reckless approach has rendered the low-income housing initiative inaccessible to the very demographic it was intended to benefit, a disservice to the citizens of Grenada.
The distressing episode in Carriacou is a testament to the NDC government’s insensitivity. Reclaiming the already allocated low-income houses and denying rightful ownership is a clear violation of trust and an affront to the hardworking people of Carriacou.
The New National Party implores the NDC government to reflect upon the core values of service, trust, and empathy, and to revert to the original ethos of the low-income housing scheme. It is a moral imperative to uphold the original intent of providing affordable housing to the needy and desist from commercialising basic human necessities. The people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique deserve nothing less than a government that stands by its promises and prioritises their welfare over fiscal gains.
In these trying times, we must not lose sight of our duty to serve the common good, a principle that the previous administration under Dr Keith Mitchell held in high regard. The New National Party stands with the people and will continue to advocate for policies that reflect the true spirit of camaraderie and social justice.

LMAO at these prices…. and some persons are siding with this???? you can build an entire house yourself with those prices… These are not low-income homes. They are just apartments for sale… Also you have to get an approved loan to purchase them.. how is this really helping the poor? this is placing them in more financial debt.
With the below quote in place please go ahead and give those who really need a roof over their heads.
I for one is not in favour of these sort of property for our people because we have land and space to erect single homes with options to put a clothes line outside ,go and pee in the backyard ,get some animals if we so desire.
People’s Republic of China, was conceived to provide a roof over the heads of the needy without burdening them financially…easy said than done.
These sort of houses are NOT suitable for the very same people they were built for and I will explain..the people the government says these houses were built to get them a roof over they heads is not the case because these houses need basically 3 main ingredients to be successful.
1) A responsible tenant
2) Electricity
3) Water
The above 3 items would shock you due to the fact that a large number of the tenants can’t agree to having all of the above over a 12 month period.
Here we go again, the party thats so concerned about the poor and vulnerable but never increased the minimum wage for years.
Now it’s housing, “affordable” or “low income housing” of which certain grouping are being deprived off by this current government.
On the marketing I see “low incom” not “NO INCOME”. Likewise, “affordable housing” refers to those with a household income at or below the median as indicated by national governments, local governments or a recognised housing affordability indicies. And, to cap this off, most literature associated with these draw attention of the need to have or obtain mortgages.
So, what is the big deal. Appearing to be on the side of the ones you have trodden on over decades?
Is this disguised as legitinate news report but is a Propoganda piece ?
Look who is even raising the issue of ” Betrayal of Trust “. That be nearly two long decades of just that by the Doc and his NNP led Government.
