Various stakeholders, including representatives of international organisations, recently met to discuss ways of preserving and recognising the natural and cultural richness of the group of Grenadine islands, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
They also assessed sites with potential for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
Meeting participants included local and national authorities, such as officials of the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government, key decision-makers, experts and representatives of associations, community groups, and non-governmental organisations.
Other participants included representatives from the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Heritage Consultant, Grenadian Michael Jessamy, said some of the existing monuments can be considered the crown jewels of the world.
As part of the meeting, participants engaged in visits to important sites to gather preliminary information in a process for their possible inclusion in the World Heritage List. Among the sites visited was the Belair Park.
