On Sunday, 14 April, Camerhogne Park will come alive with athletes competing in the exciting swim, bike and run event commonly known as Triathlon. The Rainbow Cup Grenada will also serve as the 2024 Grenada National Triathlon Championships.
Nina James, Grenada’s National Triathlon Women’s Champion along with Inga Karasek will compete with some of the best triathletes from Trinidad & Tobago (TT).
Grenada’s Tessimy Viechweg and Marc DeCaul will have the opportunity to capture the men’s title this year as Coby Sylvester, current champion, is studying abroad.
Leading the TT contingent will be 15-year-old Liam D’Abadie who was recently crowned Trinidad and Tobago’s National Sprint Triathlon Champion. Noah Teixeira, Marlon Scott and Chinara Griffith are just a few of the athletes who will journey to the Spice Island for their shot at Rainbow Cup Grenada glory.
Despite being the National Triathlon Championships, the Rainbow Cup Grenada also welcomes participants of all ages, abilities and nationalities. There will be a race for everyone.
The first race of the day, kicking off promptly at 7 am, will be the Sprint Triathlon, a 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run where the winner is expected to finish in one hour.
The Try-a-Tri will be the perfect opportunity for anyone wanting to attempt a triathlon for the first time. It is a simple test of fitness and endurance with achievable distances; 0.3 km swim, 10 km bike and a 2.5 km run. These distances represent half of the Sprint Triathlon distances. The Sprint Triathlon and the Try-a-Tri can be done individually or as a 2–3-person team relay.
Glenis Bain, Skyla Lee Loo and the Gooding sisters, Halle and Willow, will be some of the names to cheer on in the youth triathlon. There will be 3 races with various distances for the 15 and under; ages 3–5 years (25 m swim, 500 m bike, 250 m run); ages 6–9 years (100 m swim, 1km bike, 500 m run), and ages 10–15 years (375 m swim, 10 km bike, 2.5 km run).
Race organiser Jason Gooding of the Odessey Timing & Events Company is optimistic about this event. “After hosting the Rainbow Cup Tobago for 18 years, I am very proud to be bringing this event to Grenada. I believe that the Rainbow Cup Grenada will become a premier sporting event for destination Grenada, attracting athletes from around the world.”
Gooding added, “Rainbow Cup Tobago started with 35 participants 18 years ago, and now it has over 500 participants, but it all started with that first race.” He continued, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors who have shown support for this event; Fun House Mini-Golf, Silversands Grenada, Brydens, Cauls, St Augustine Medical Services, Bougainvillea Apartments, True Blue Bay Resort and the Bay House.”
