St David’s Catholic Secondary School (SDCSS), home of St David Track Blazers, has plenty to rejoice about after achieving another consecutive win at this year’s Republic Bank Intercol Championship in the Girls’ division. They secured a total of 205.50 points during the 3-day athletics event.
Anglican High School (AHS) finished second with 169.80 points, while St Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) came in third with 101.50 points. Numerous students and residents crowded the streets in St David, concluding their motorcade at the La Sagesse playing field. Prior to their impressive performance in the track and field events, the girls paraded confidently in their red and white cadet uniforms, holding prop rifles, and emerged victorious in the 2024 Intercol march past.
On Friday, 15 March there was an atmosphere of excitement as revellers led a long line of traffic and honked their car horns. Students celebrated their victory with trophies in their hands, while others paraded the streets holding costume rifles.
NOW Grenada caught up with 2 of their outstanding athletes in the field events — 18-year-old Rayvohn Telesford and 17-year-old Suerena Alexander — both gold medallists in the javelin throw.
Telesford and Alexander, who both captured gold and bronze medals in the male and female U-17 (Youth) javelin throw at Carfita 2022, are part of St David Track Blazers and have now set their focus on competing at the Carifta games.
Telesford said, “I felt confident I knew I was gonna win. So I was going there to establish a PB. But unfortunately, that didn’t happen. But I [went] in with the mindset to handle business.”
Telesford successfully made the Carifta team in both 2022 and 2023, and is thrilled with his choice to transition from athletics to specialising in javelin. With a remarkable throw of 64.06 metres, he clinched the gold at Intercol. Inspired by 2-time champion Anderson Peters, Telesford aspires to succeed with the guidance of Coach Paul Phillip. “Training with the world champion has placed me on a different level from everyone else. It’s really inspiring just watching him throw just inspires me to throw like him,” he said.
In the female division, Alexander dominated with a javelin throw of 44.49 metres. She has been throwing javelins since primary level and developed a love for the sport. “I was prepared and felt comfortable going into this year’s Intercol games. I felt like I could have thrown further, but I am ok with my performance,” she said.
