- 16 homicides for 2023
Police in Grenada have confirmed that one person was killed on Carnival Monday due to gun violence. This latest death brings to 16 the number of homicides for 2023.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Vannie Curwen, in charge of Crimes, confirmed the incident in the upscale residential community of Egmont in the St George South East constituency but was tightlipped about the details. The incident occurred in the afternoon while carnival bands were parading on the streets of St George’s. “I will not confirm the details, but the incident has occurred,” Curwen responded when asked to confirm the incident published on a Facebook post of an electronic newspaper.
In July, Police said there had been an uptick in criminal activities, and Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said there was an increase in the number of illegal firearms confiscated for 2023 compared to 2022. During the first 6 months of 2022, there were 16 illegal firearms confiscated; however, in 2023 there were 31.
In a special national address on 3 August, Mitchell, Prime Minister and Minister for National Security announced that the Cabinet on 12 June 2023 took a significant step towards enhancing an approach to safety and national security by establishing a National Security Council Steering Committee. “This Steering Committee, comprised of dedicated and skilled individuals from various sectors, will be tasked with providing leadership and oversight of the process that will result in the establishment of the National Security Council,” he said.
The Prime Minister explained that the National Security Council will be tasked with formulating strategies and policies to safeguard our citizens. “It will be required to create and implement a comprehensive national security policy and strategy for Grenada that will underscore the country’s security goals and priorities,” he said.
Focus on how these illegal guns are entering the country and arrest those responsible. The more guns falling into the hands of criminals the more violent crime results. Visitors are watching this increase in crime and reconsidering traveling to Grenada. Crime is also a problem in Vincy, that true, seems like it is happening all over the islands.
A domestic violence in Egmont during carnival is a loosy greasy press trick.come on Now Grenada you are shooting yourself in the foot.
” The incident occurred at an upscale neighborhood , Edgemont, ” far from any parade in St. GEORGES. So any suggested association with carnival is misleading. I was on the streets of St. George’s in all of the ” jump up ” during the festivities and and in many other seasonal events, and I witnessed no violence . So my humble conclusion is that we enjoyed a ” violence free ” carnival celebration, Sadly however two individuals who may have known each other chose to settle their differences in a manner which lead to death and injury. But no relationship to carnival; whatever. Hopefully the authorities would augment there surveillance so that no guns are in the possession of unauthorised individuals.
Day r trying, but I no a lot off crooked ccops, that don’t care,I’m not calling names, But they need to do better
I have read the comments on this posting. They seem to come from some very smart and well educated individuals ro whom I pose this questions….
why do we continue to judge the police on crime solving when the investigation is on going?
In my experience with the RGPF they always get the right man when the case is closed.
Did you know that in the mighty USA where some of you reside there cases still involve that began even before some of your lives even begun?
And yet that many innocent people are imprisoned because officers want to solve a case to please folks as opposed to solving a crime and bring justice? Yes in the USA.
Finally is the Minister of National S3curity have to be some who when his position is announced all criminals suddenly run into hiding until he is from removed from office?
PLEASE LET US CONTINUE TO COMMEND THE RGPF. THEY DO AN EXCELLENT JOB AND WE ALL.
LET US STOP MAKING COMMENTS FOR THE SAKE OF IT BUT RATHER BECAUSE WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY MAKES SENSE FOR ALL.
Tbh Grenada is not a real place, police are not supposed to be friendly to the citizens, it’s only because the island small and everyone knows who you are, To make it more funnier the wardens themselves are better at being police than police them selves, all the police in Grenada does is clamp your car and give u a ticket or take you to court and look out for unwanted conflict the only units I’ll call police anytime is SSU RRU AND CID when they say give up yourself and u ignore them, (it’s like a living nightmare you ever watched Terminator they will not stop until they capture you) they coming for you with full force. Let’s go of topic (Grenada corrupted bad Grenada is a small place yet the island is be exploited, and everything is really expensive, the price reaching the firmament Yh we live in a dome a flat plain, you have a $100 bill that’s done in 5 minutes back then it was nice, you could of go with 100 in a store and come out with 7 bags of groceries , kill the man who gave Grenadian chances to grow and be better, everyone would be rich and no one would complain so sooner or later y’all gonna regret it and can someone why the port so expensive it’s like they that run Grenada tbh anytime I get the chance or opportunity to snitch I’d let President Putin know what’s happening in Grenada oh I forgot I have cousins in Russia like I said time to make Grenada richer not poorer Marish bishop(Rip) would not be happy if he was alive, kill the man for making millions to hate Grenada grow if it wasn’t for him we would be like cave man stuck in ice).(the government of Grenada is greedy corrupted and expensive. The police is inexperienced in combat against who ever they wanna run down arrest the Keith Mitchell for the crimes and deaths, the vaccine was a lie and he knew yet he heard about 1 mil he got money hungry and said yes out sisters and brothers we must take the vaccine, it was meant for those who have a weak Immune system and he collected some serious check for the deaths, he must be held for all the deaths on his command just like bishop he must answer for he should be trialed and be executed) that’s off my chestand they only playing a pile of shit on the radio station about gun sex and drugs no wonder y’all daughters tossing them self around like rag dolls, the mothers are the blame when they know their daughter young and looking good and going out with clothes that reveals parts they say Yh gwon cum back home early everyone can have fun y’all daughter wearing booty shorts dress that climbing up their legs and when men see that and they wanna slip and slide them girls screwing up like the beer sour, nowadays u tell a girl hi and she watching you like go get a life Like Grenadian soca artist Khalifa said Them girls is a bunch of local foreigners, fellas stop lust after women? They will be your downfall they are the reason why your bills are expensive they meeting other men and playing the bee that sting the bird aka the Bad B*t*hes, I know some fellas that have aids and they sharing it with them dunce gyal that nips on a guy that handsome and have money, like American Artist Future said mask off chase the check never chase the B*t*h and them lil boi and big men not learning, women can’t give men anything except love sex and a bunch of punk kids) lol i really forgot why I was here
Everyone is free to express his or hers’ opinion, but I must ask if our previous minister of national security ever had law enforcement experience, or the one before that. When folks comment that another unsolved murder took place, it means that these people live foreign. They should get facts before chastising. Oscar Pritchard
So if you know what to do and you are qualified and can do a better job then apply for the position if not shush stuppsssss
Oh boy sorry to hear about another unsolved murder in our little island of Grenada.
Our police are just not doing a good job with clearing our streets of illegal firearms which i am sure they have a clue where they are coming from…just a clue of some of our residents from war zones where guns are freely available…you get the idea.
Now back to the police who seems to think that their job is lottery ticket so they just collect the perks which there are many and they under perform on all level.
They have to start doing police work and remember the pledge of serve and protect.
There’s silly ole me thinking it’s the shooters fault when really it’s the police’s fault all the time
How come no one mentioned the illegal firearms on our streets and the origin of them
Another unsolved murder? What timeframe are you granting the police to resolve this, a few hours?
You fail to see the facts which is an unsolved murder which I am sure we have more.
So a crime happened a few hours ago, and your best comment is an unsolved crime not even 48 hours.
I am sure you read the whole thing ? And yes it is unsolved!
You mean we need a security council to tell us what we already know.
This is a no confidence in the minister of National security. The PM should relinquish the post.
The PM is not the most qualified Grenadian to be Minister of National Security. I have said this before and I will say it now. With no prior experience in law enforcement, this self-appointed position is nothing more than a figurehead. If Grenada is serious about reducing crime, the government needs to acquire the technology to digitally screen all incoming shipments at all of our ports of entry, furthermore, the Coast Guard should conduct random searches at sea, and the police should also engage in random stop and frisk practices on the road. The National Security Council is, will, and, will always be a waste of time and precious resources. Again, the PM should acknowledge that his strength lies elsewhere, and cede this responsibility to those who can do the job better and keep his focus on other policy that preserves our collective dignity.
A square peg in a round hole. Totally outside his capacity, and it shows. This the reason he’s forming a “council”, a euphemism for wasting tax-payers’ money. One would think that the uptick in crime would serve as an indication that this ministry would be better served by a more qualified and concerned individual, but ego and self awareness are not complimentary. Out of his depth on National Security, and the nation suffers
Agreed.
I have a feeling that the people commenting on this post are under the influence of alcohol. Maybe is me that stupid. Nothing is making sense.
