Alliance Française, a French language institution based in Grenada since 1952, resumes its trademark French CXC Support Classes for Form 5 students in St Patrick and St Andrew, who are taking French at CXC.
The 1 1/2 hour weekly classes will be held at the Mac Donald College on Tuesdays from 3:00pm to 4:30pm and at the Grenville Secondary School on Fridays from 3.30pm to 5:00pm.
According to Director Magali Bongrand, Alliance Française has been trying to set up those classes for students in the north of the island for quite a few years already, but from the availability of a teacher who would qualify for the Alliance Française French standard to the availability of a venue, there has always been a setback.
Until now, the French CXC support classes were only taking place at Alliance Française in St Georges. Students from as far as Grenville or St Mark, had to travel to St Georges at great expense to enroll in this course which scores a 95% success rate for its French CXC students.
Bongrand said, “We are pleased to have found an agreement with Diane Abel Jeffrey to deliver these classes and with the partnering schools to provide a venue. Our goal is to give a better chance to students of French language at CXC level to pass the exam with flying colours. Now students in St Mark, St Patrick, St Andrew and St David will easily access this service.”
The CXC Support Classes started over 15 years ago at the Alliance Française and have been very popular. Although there is a small fee for the class, the Alliance Française heavily subsidises this service, which it consider a key aspect of its role to promote the French language in Grenada.
Abel Jeffrey is the President of the French Teachers Association and a qualified French teacher who teaches at the Mac Donald College in Sauteurs. She is fluent in French and attended several workshops at the Alliance Française in Grenada, Martinique and France. She qualified with Masters in French Language from the Horizons University in France, and she is currently the beneficiary of a scholarship by the Alliance Française to study a Masters in French as Foreign Language at the University of the French West Indies.
