Histories of Grenada’s 20th-century political transformations — the independence struggle from the 1950s to the 1970s and the momentous Revolution of 1979 — fail to address the relationship between these events and African-derived faiths.
Join Grenadian historian and archivist John Angus Martin and Shantel George, PhD, Lecturer in History at the University of Glasgow, who will present “The Shango Man and the Unfinished Revolution” on Thursday, 31 August 2023, at 5:30 pm at Marryshow House, H A Blaize Street, St George’s.
The talk proposes African work and the Spiritual Baptist faith should be viewed as more than an ‘irrational’ and ‘illogical’ incorporation into Grenadian political life. To that end, this discussion examines the independence movement and the Revolution through the eyes of African-derived religious practitioners, exploring their difficulties and anticipations and how they shaped political transitions during the colonial and post-colonial periods.
Sounds interesting. The current social injustice stems from the continuation of colonial rule and attitude towards black Grenadians.
