Officers of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) are casting their ballots today ahead of the general population who will be voting on Thursday, 23 June 2022.
Ferdinand Phillip, Civic and Education Officer at the Parliamentary Elections Office said that 914 officers at different ranks within the police force are scheduled to vote in 15 polling booths throughout the country.
A polling booth is established in each constituency and the votes from the police officers will also be counted on 23 June. “The police ballots will be counted in the constituency where it was cast on the same day that we are counting the general population. It means that no one will know who the police voted for on the day that they cast their ballots,” Phillips said.
Both the OAS and Caricom have sent an election observer mission to the island for the 23 June 2022 elections for which there are 41 candidates. Only the incumbent New National Party (NNP) by Dr Keith Mitchell and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by Dickon Mitchell were able to name candidates for all 15 seats.
Whereas Dr Mitchell is an experienced politician who has served in the Lower House of Parliament since 1984, Dickon Mitchell is a newcomer to politics who was elected leader of the NDC in October 2021. He is not known to have been involved in politics before he began as the NDC leader.
The OAS observer mission for the general elections will be led by Dr Rosina Wiltshire, a former United Nations Resident Coordinator, and United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative for Barbados and the OECS. The Chief of Mission for the Caricom election observer team is John Jarvis. He is the Commissioner of the Electoral Boundaries Commission in Antigua and Barbuda.
The NNP and NDC parties held rallies over the weekend which were attended by thousands of supporters.
A total of 87,794 individuals are currently registered to vote on 23 June.
