- Outgoing board chaired by Genevieve Gibbs
- Gill presented Bill in 2011 to establish SMC
- Gill is appointed to serve for 3 years in first instance
Culture Minister Yolande Bain Horsford has confirmed that Arley Gill who served as Minister responsible for culture under the Tillman Thomas Administration has been appointed to serve as the new chairman of the Spicemas Corporation (SMC).
The outgoing board term expired in August and a new board was reconstituted. It was chaired by Genevieve Gibbs.
In 2011, Gill served as a senator and cabinet minister when he presented the Bill to establish the Corporation. Previously, a Carnival Committee under the Ministry of Culture was responsible for carnival activities.
He was expelled from Government and the party in 2012.
An attorney at law and cultural expert Gill said he accepted the offer to serve in the post after deep consideration. “I accepted the offer to chair the SMC after deep consideration and profound discussions with the Minister of Culture, Hon. Yolande Bain-Horsford,’’ said Gill.
The Minister, in welcoming Gill to the SMC, also thanked the corporation’s outgoing board and former chair, Genevieve Gibbs, for her outstanding service. The Corporation is responsible for promoting and organizing Grenada’s Carnival and all official Spicemas events.
Gill is appointed to serve for 3 years in the first instance.
In 2020 and 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellations of carnivals in Grenada. “Spicemas is some nine months away and a carnival of some type may be possible. Of course, a lot will depend on our Covid situation before a final decision is made by the government,’’ said Gill.
“Nonetheless, I can assure you that once sanctioned by the government, whatever format a 2022 Spicemas takes — virtual or otherwise — it would be a festival of a high standard; one incorporating all the elements of our carnival, with the objective of producing a world-class carnival arts product.’’
The SMC is a statutory arm under the Grenada Cultural Foundation. The current board comprises: ACP John Mitchell, Dennies Burris, Chris Edwards, Victor Ashby, Silvan Chan, Chevane Britton, Michael Stephen, Petra Roach, Sherene Thomas, Oslyn Crosby and Kelvin Jacob.
I would appreciate the email of Mr. Arley Gill. It’s in regard to an article I read on his views of the British Royals.
Thanks.

Hello Mr. Gill
My name is Hassena Baksh and was born under British Occupation in Guiana .
I want to tell my story how I lost my childhood because of the Queen ; the sufferings, humiliation, and shame were so prevalent.
Queen Elizabeth is no saint; and her atrocities to “her people “ in her coronation speech while USA, Australia and New Zealand her friends shows how racist she is.
My ancestors from North India – young boys and girls were kidnapped aka human trafficking for the glory of Queen Elizabeth and England.
The humiliation was unspeakable, every was branded with their numbers, young girls were raped consistently before arriving in Guiana-
Commonwealth nations should come together and demand reparation before she dies- and useless Charles become the King.
These Royals have been living of of our ancestors sweat, they have no jobs, spend lavishly and racist.
Useless Charles wanted to be Camilla tampons, Harry calling his airforce graduates “Paki” scorning them of smelling, poking fun of the head dress of Arabs and wearing an Hitler styled jacket to private party.
What is his “punishment nada. Said he was not aware who Hitler was.
I live in Toronto and would like to connect seeing you too want justice for Grenadine
