- Belmont man on 5 indictable charges
- Attorney unable to substantiate client’s medical condition to secure bail
- Shot men warded at General Hospital
A slew of charges was slapped on a 24-year-old Rahim Kelshall of Belmont who is alleged to have shot 2 men over the weekend.
He made his first court appearance Wednesday, 3 October at the Number 1 Magistrate Court on 5 indictable charges. He was charged with 2 attempted capital murders, robbery with violence, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
Kelshall stood before being Magistrate Tamara Gill and is being represented by Attorney Deloni Edwards. Petitioning the court to grant bail for the accused on the grounds of a medical condition, Edwards failed to secure bail for his client.
NOW Grenada understands that Kelshall suffers from seizures, however Kelshall was denied bail after his attorney was unable to show proof of his medical condition to substantiate the claim. Edwards stated that he was unable to present those medical reports since Wednesday was his only opportunity to converse with his client since his arrest on Saturday night.
Another strategy used to secure bail by Edwards was to convince the court that his client — a father of a 3-year-old, who also has another pending matter before the court involving a firearm — has a track record of not missing a court date and was previously allowed to travel back and forth from Trinidad.
The prosecution made the case that Kelshall is a flight risk and should not be granted bail since he was involved in a crime of a similar nature in Trinidad and Tobago and has the potential of repeating the same offence if bail were to be granted.
Kelshall was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prisons and is scheduled to make a reappearance 23 October 2018.
The shot men, Brudel Buckmire, prominent business owner of the “D joint Bar” on Kirani James Boulevard and Garfield Matthew, are still warded at the General Hospital.
Officers investigating the incident found the weapon alleged to have been used.
